THE MATHEWS FAMILY LINEAGE |
John Waker MATHEWS (1759 – 1807) John was born a month before Christmas 1759 at Brooks Street Holborn, London. His father was 19-year-old Richard MATHEWS (1733 - ????) and his mother was a 17-year-old named Mary WAKER (1735 - ????) from Seal, Kent, the same village as Richard’s. John's baptism took place at St Andrew’s Anglican Church Holborn on the 12th of December 1759. |

Given that his parents were married at a young age, John probably had other siblings, but no digital records could be accessed. His marriage however was recorded, that being to Elizabeth SCRIVEN (1757 – 1819) on the 25th of April 1782, the ceremony solemnized in St George Anglican Church, Hanover Square. |

By this time the couple already had their first child, George born in 1780. It is unknown how many siblings George had, but he certainly had a brother named Sampson, who’s birth was recorded in 1784. In 1789, 30-year-old John is listed in Andrews's New London Directory as a carver, gilder, and trader of wood/furniture. His business premises were No 441, The Strand, London. John died on the 11th of August 1807 and was buried in St Anne's churchyard Soho. The church record notes that he lived in Princess Street Soho. Elizabeth survived her husband by twelve years, her burial being recorded on the 17th of March 1819 at St Giles in the Fields Soho. |
